Chapter History

On May 12, 1974, the Theta Psi Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated became the first black sorority at the University of Mississippi - Oxford campus. The chapter was chartered by twelve, pretty, poignant pearls:

  • Rachel Balentine
  • Dorothy Balfour
  • Demetria Barnes
  • Jerrie Bell
  • Linda Buford
  • Bobbie Carmichael
  • Juanita Everson
  • Berniece Polk
  • Margarie Richmond
  • Jerrylyn Royston
  • Barbra Walker
  • Dianne Wilson

Theta Psi has established a strong relationship with the Lafayette-Oxford-University (LOU) Community, with 1,000 hours devoted to the community. Each member exemplifies the meaning of true sisterhood, service, and scholarship on and off campus. Alumna Leah Gibson is one of few black women to have held the title of Miss University, gaining the title in 2017. Alumna Rose Jackson Flenorl, became the first black woman inducted into the Ole Miss Hall of Fame and in 2008 became the first African American to be President of the Ole Miss Alumni Association.
